Check the outlet and the plug first, then confirm the basket or drawer is pushed fully home. Many models will not power the display, and most will not start heating, unless the drawer is seated and the safety switch is closed.
If your air fryer will not turn on, the cause is almost always simple: no power reaching the unit, or a safety interlock telling the appliance that the basket is not in place. - No power at the outlet. The socket may be dead, controlled by a wall switch, or on a circuit that has tripped. A phone charger or a lamp in the same socket tells you instantly whether the outlet is live.
- A tripped socket or breaker. Air fryers draw a lot of current, often 1400 to 1700 watts. That surge can trip a socket with its own reset button, a GFCI or RCD outlet, or the breaker in your consumer unit or panel.
- The basket safety switch. Almost every modern air fryer has an interlock that only lets it run when the drawer or basket is fully inserted. If the drawer is a fraction out, food is jammed at the back, or the switch is dusty, the unit reads it as open and refuses to start.
- A blown fuse in the plug (UK). Plugs in the UK and Ireland contain a replaceable fuse, usually rated 13 amp. If it has blown, the whole appliance is dead even though nothing else is wrong. Owners outside the UK will not have this fuse in the plug and can skip that step.
- A faulty or damaged cord. A cord that has been pinched, kinked at the strain relief, chewed by a pet, or pulled hard can break internally. The unit then loses power intermittently or completely, often depending on how the cable is positioned.
It helps to separate two symptoms. If the display is completely dark, you are looking at a power problem: outlet, plug, fuse or cord. If the display lights up but the air fryer will not start heating, the more likely culprit is the basket interlock or a control that has not been set, such as a timer left on zero or a start button that needs a firmer press.
How to fix it step by step
Work through these in order and stop as soon as the unit powers on. Each step rules out one of the causes above.
- Test the outlet. Unplug the air fryer and plug a lamp, a phone charger or another small appliance into the same socket. If that does not work either, the problem is the outlet, not the fryer.
- Reset the socket and breaker. Press the reset button on the outlet if it has one (common on GFCI and RCD sockets), then check your breaker panel or consumer unit for a switch that has flipped to off or sits in the middle, and reset it firmly.
- Try a different outlet. Plug the air fryer directly into a known working wall socket. Avoid extension leads and power strips, which can be undersized for the wattage and may trip or fail to deliver full power.
- Reseat the basket or drawer. Pull the drawer all the way out and push it firmly back until it clicks or stops. Make sure no food, foil or a rack is blocking it from closing the last few millimetres, which is exactly what the safety switch is checking.
- Check the controls. On digital models, set both a temperature and a time above zero, then press start firmly. Some units will not begin until both values are entered. On dial models, turn the timer past zero, since the timer often doubles as the power switch.
- Inspect the cord. Run your hand along the whole cable and look closely at both ends. With the unit plugged in, flex the cord gently near the plug and near the appliance. If power flickers when you move it, the cord is damaged and the unit should not be used.
- Replace the plug fuse (UK and Ireland only). Unplug the unit, open the plug with a screwdriver, and swap the fuse for a new one of the same rating, usually 13 amp. If the new fuse blows immediately, stop and treat the appliance as faulty.
- Let it cool down. Some air fryers have a thermal cut out that disables the unit if it has overheated, for example after long back to back batches. Unplug it, leave it for thirty minutes to an hour, then try again.
If none of these steps wakes the air fryer, you have systematically ruled out the everyday causes, and it is time to consider a genuine fault.
When it is a fault and you should contact the maker or replace
If you have confirmed a live outlet, a good cord, a fresh plug fuse where relevant, and a fully seated basket, and the air fryer is still dead, you are most likely looking at an internal fault. Signs that point to a real failure rather than a simple fix include the following.
- The display stays dark on a socket you have proven is live with another appliance.
- A new plug fuse blows the moment you plug the unit in, which suggests an internal short.
- You smell burning, see scorch marks around the plug or the vents, or the unit tripped your breaker with a bang.
- The fan or heater cuts out during cooking and will not restart even after the unit has fully cooled.
In those cases, stop using the air fryer. A short or a burning smell is a fire risk, not an inconvenience.
